Choose by Experience, Not Confusion
Start with what the technology actually does, how the heat feels, and why you might choose one experience over another.
Far Infrared
Radiant panels warm the body directly while the surrounding air can remain cooler than a traditional sauna.
Tap to understandFar Infrared
Infrared is invisible, non-ionizing electromagnetic energy. Instead of relying mainly on very hot room air, FAR infrared panels radiate energy toward the body and surrounding surfaces, where that energy is absorbed and experienced as heat.
Radiant heat reaches you directly.
Carbon heating panels emit far-infrared radiation. The body and nearby surfaces absorb that radiant energy and warm, while the sauna air typically stays at a more moderate temperature than a traditional stone sauna.
Warm without needing an extremely hot room.
Infrared saunas commonly operate at lower air temperatures than traditional saunas. You can still perspire as your body responds to the thermal load.
Comfortable radiant warmth for regular use.
FAR infrared can suit people who enjoy sauna warmth but do not want the very high ambient temperature associated with traditional sauna.
They create heat differently.
Infrared emphasizes radiant energy at a lower room temperature. Traditional sauna emphasizes hotter air, heated stones and the option to create löyly steam.
You want direct radiant warmth and a more moderate room temperature for everyday sauna use.
Infrared is non-ionizing radiation. Sauna use is still heat exposure, so follow manufacturer guidance and seek medical advice when heat exposure may not be appropriate for you.
Near Infrared
A shorter infrared wavelength added to selected full-spectrum systems rather than simply a stronger FAR heater.
Tap to understandNear Infrared
Infrared is a family of wavelengths. Near infrared sits closer to visible red light than far infrared. Selected Golden Designs full-spectrum saunas add dedicated Near IR elements alongside other infrared heaters.
A different wavelength, not merely more heat.
Near infrared has a shorter wavelength than far infrared. Full-spectrum systems use more than one infrared range rather than relying on FAR alone.
It broadens the wavelength mix.
A full-spectrum sauna combines different infrared ranges, typically pairing broad radiant FAR heat with additional infrared elements.
Near IR is also used in photobiomodulation research.
Clinical photobiomodulation depends on controlled wavelength, power, distance and exposure. A sauna Near IR heater should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a clinical PBM device.
Not everyone needs full spectrum.
FAR infrared may already suit you if your priority is simply comfortable radiant sauna heat. Full spectrum matters when you specifically want multiple infrared wavelength ranges.
You want more than FAR infrared alone and prefer a sauna built around multiple infrared wavelength ranges.
Low, Ultra Low & Near Zero EMF
Same infrared concept. Different electromagnetic-field specification around the electrical system.
Tap to understandLow, Ultra Low & Near Zero EMF
Low, Ultra Low and Near Zero EMF do not describe three different types of infrared heat. They describe different measured electromagnetic-field levels around electrically powered infrared heating systems.
Electrical equipment produces electromagnetic fields.
Infrared heaters run on electricity. Like other electrical equipment, they produce electromagnetic fields around their electrical components.
The specification, not the infrared principle.
Low EMF and Near Zero EMF saunas can still use FAR infrared heat. What changes is the measured EMF performance of the heater configuration.
Read the individual model measurement.
Golden Designs specifications for qualifying Near Zero EMF models should be checked on the individual product page, including the stated measurement distance.
Because the specification matters to you.
Some shoppers prefer electrical products designed around lower measured EMF. This does not automatically mean a sauna feels hotter or provides better results.
Same infrared family. Different EMF specification.
Traditional Stove Heat
The heater warms the stones and room. Water on hot stones creates löyly and changes the humidity and sensation.
Tap to understandTraditional Stove Heat
Traditional sauna uses a heater and a mass of sauna stones. The heater warms the stones, air and surrounding surfaces. Water may then be poured onto the heated stones to create löyly.
The heater and stones.
The stove converts energy into heat and raises the temperature of the stones and sauna room.
It creates löyly.
Water contacting heated stones rapidly vaporizes. The sudden increase in humidity makes the existing heat feel more intense against the skin.
No. Steam changes the experience.
The heater and stones create the thermal environment. Water adds the characteristic humidity event associated with traditional sauna.
Hotter air, stones and controllable löyly.
Traditional sauna is for shoppers who want the classic hot room, stone mass and water-on-stones ritual.
You want classic sauna heat with stones and the ability to create löyly.
Hybrid Saunas
Two different sauna experiences can live in one cabin: infrared warmth or traditional stone-and-löyly heat.
Tap to understandHybrid Saunas
Selected Golden Designs hybrid cabins provide infrared heating capability and a traditional stone heater within the same sauna environment.
Radiant warmth.
Use infrared when you want direct radiant heating and a more moderate surrounding air temperature.
Hotter room, stones and löyly.
Use the traditional heater when you want classic sauna heat and water-on-stones steam.
You do not have to choose one personality.
Hybrid is useful when different users or different days call for different styles of sauna heat.
Only if the flexibility matters.
If you already know you only want one style, a dedicated infrared or traditional sauna may be enough.
You want infrared and traditional sauna available inside the same cabin.
Chromotherapy & Red Light
Colored ambient light changes atmosphere. Red-light photobiomodulation is a separate technology whose effect depends on wavelength and dose.
Tap to understandChromotherapy & Red Light
Chromotherapy changes the visual environment. Red-light photobiomodulation uses specific wavelengths of light. Neither feature determines whether the sauna itself is infrared, traditional or hybrid.
Selectable ambient color.
Multi-color lighting changes the visual atmosphere of the sauna without changing its heating technology.
Because sauna is also an environment.
Lighting allows the same sauna to feel bright, warm, quiet or immersive according to your preference.
Specific wavelengths can create non-thermal effects.
In true photobiomodulation, controlled wavelengths and doses of red or near-infrared light are delivered to tissue.
Not every red light is automatically clinical PBM.
Therapeutic output depends on wavelength, irradiance, distance and exposure time. Integrated sauna lighting should not automatically be presented as equivalent to a dedicated clinical device.
Choose the heat architecture first.
First decide whether you prefer FAR infrared, full spectrum, traditional or hybrid heat. Then consider lighting features as an additional layer of the experience.
Chromotherapy = atmosphere. Red light = a separate light technology. Infrared panels or the sauna stove = the primary heat system.
