The defining difference is not simply temperature. A traditional sauna heats the room, holds heat within natural stones, and allows water to create löyly, the short-lived wave of steam and humidity that changes how the heat feels against the body.

Infrared systems primarily warm the body through radiant energy. Red-light systems provide light exposure. A traditional hot-rock sauna instead creates a heated room environment that can also produce steam.
