Repeated heating and cooling gradually weakens sauna stones. Over time, they may crack, crumble, settle more tightly, and leave small fragments beneath the heater. This can restrict airflow and change the way the heater releases heat and steam.
As a practical rhythm, inspect and rearrange the stones at least once a year, replacing damaged or weakened pieces. Heavily or frequently used saunas may benefit from more frequent inspection.

How to Check and Maintain Sauna Heater Stones.
Allow the heater to cool completely before handling the stones. Remove them carefully and look for changes caused by repeated heat cycling.
- Replace stones that split easily, crumble, or have visibly weakened.
- Clear fragments and stone dust from the bottom of the heater.
- Check whether the stones have settled into a dense, airflow-restricting mass.
- Return only sound stones and add new compatible pieces where needed.
- Inspect more often when the sauna is used frequently or commercially.
How to Pile Sauna Heater Stones.
Wash or rinse new stones as directed, allow them to dry, and place them individually rather than pouring the entire box into the heater. The goal is a stable stone bed with open pathways for air.
- Use the stone size and quantity stated for the heater.
- Place larger, stable stones lower in the heater where appropriate.
- Arrange stones loosely enough for air to circulate between them.
- Do not wedge stones tightly between heating elements.
- Do not force the elements apart or use stones to bend them.
